Kurt Johnsonengines, racing and competing with dad — keeping up with one of pro stock’s best
interview and photo by John Knapp
How long have you been a drag racer, and what was your first professional race?I have been a drag racer my entire life, dating back to when Dad (six-time Pro Stock champion Warren Johnson) was building engines back in his shop in Fridley, Minn., in the late ’60s and early ’70s. My first professional race was my Pro Stock debut at the 1993 Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.
What’s your favorite thing about Pro Stock racing?I think, more than anything else, it’s the challenge of trying to be quicker and go faster than everyone else, when you have pretty much the same horsepower and equipment. In my opinion, that makes it more of an art and a science than just simple competition.
At the starting line, is your father just another competitor, or is it something more?Obviously, it’s something more, simply due to the fact that we put his engines together, and we know exactly what he has in terms of equipment. On top of that, it’s tough to beat his experience—he definitely has an advantage in that department. The best part of racing each other is that we know one of our cars will advance to the next round. Of course, the best case scenario is that we meet in the final.
Do you build and test your Cobalt’s engines yourself?Absolutely. We run the engine program, not only for my ACDelco Cobalt, but also Dad’s GM Performance Parts GXP in the back corner of our shop in Sugar Hill, Ga. We handle everything from ordering parts and assembly to tuning them on the dyno.
How do you recruit technicians for your race shop/team?We’re always looking for people, and are constantly receiving résumés—we have a stack of them at the office right now. The biggest thing is finding someone who is truly interested in what we do. You don’t want to hire someone just to have a body there. We’re confident we can teach people to do things the way we like, so we want someone who wants to put their heart and soul into it and be part of the team.
How do you keep the team’s morale up on long race weekends? That’s easy. It’s all a matter of having a positive attitude, with proper communication being the key. If you have good communication among your team members, you can go a long way. It can be positive or negative, but keeping the streams open is the biggest thing.

ACDelco Helps Change Installers

ACDelco Helps Change Installers’ Perceptions With ‘All Makes and Models Challenge’
GRAND BLANC, MICH. — Getting people to change their ideas sometimes takes a radical move. That’s why ACDelco initiated its 2007 “All Makes and Models Challenge,” getting a group of shop owners and technicians to install ACDelco parts in non-GM vehicles to transform the perception that ACDelco parts fit only GM vehicles.
“Research showed that while technicians know that ACDelco offers a full line of parts for non-GM applications, that awareness sometimes doesn’t translate to actual practice,” said Chris Brandt, advertising manager, ACDelco. “If they were willing to try our parts for a non-GM application, it was usually things like wiper blades or filters — parts that are low-risk for comebacks.”
So ACDelco sent the selected shops a variety of parts — brake pads and rotors, alternators, wire sets, ball joints and compressors — with the agreement that the technicians would try these products on Fords, Dodges, Toyotas and Hyundais. The results were then posted in full-page advertisements in some of the leading automotive trade publications.
“Doing the test was a means to get that information front and center to installers and to address this perception gap in the marketplace,” Brandt said. “We thought testimonials from actual technicians were a strong message to send to other technicians. So we set out to show them that ACDelco has quality applications for both GM and non-GM vehicles in fit, form, and function.”
Mark Hyde, owner of Hyde Auto Service in Oklahoma City, was asked to replace worn-out wires in a 1998 Ford Mustang with an ACDelco wire set.
“We were able to order ACDelco wires from our electronic catalog,” Hyde said. “We compared the Ford factory wires and ACDelco wires side by side and found they looked exactly the same. The installation was a breeze and everything went back together fine. The customer’s car ran great when we finished, and she was very happy. We will continue to use ACDelco ‘all makes and models’ parts on our customers’ cars so that we won’t miss a beat in our continued effort to repair cars with the right parts the first time.”
Dave Christopher, owner of Christopher’s Car Care in Tallmadge, Ohio, installed an ACDelco compressor on a 1996 Dodge Intrepid.
“The installation went very well,” Christopher said. “Right out of the box, the compressor fit perfectly. All the parts were supplied, including new gaskets, seals and O-rings, and the fit and performance were excellent — true to the original part. Plus, with the complete unit, we had what we needed in the box and the job went more quickly and easily. We didn’t have to look for seals or gaskets in the back room. Not only did this part ensure a quality job, but an efficient one that saved me time in the bay.”
Mike Koebke of San Antonio replaced the ball joints in a 2000 Toyota Tundra with ACDelco parts.
“The installation of the ACDelco parts went flawlessly,” said Koebke, who owns Gus Mann Automotive in San Antonio. “The new parts matched the OE design perfectly, and they fit exactly like the OE parts do. We were very satisfied. At Gus Mann Automotive, we take pride in what we do and will not settle for inferior parts. The safety of our customers and our reputation are extremely important, and we now feel very comfortable with installing ACDelco parts in non-GM vehicles.”
Bill James, owner of Bill’s Quality Automotive in Tulsa, Okla., installed an ACDelco alternator in a 1997 Ford Expedition.
“The installation was very smooth,” James said. “The unit was properly clocked, the belt pulley was correct and all the bolt holes had clean threads. The alternator also came with very detailed removal, installation and testing instructions to help remind technicians of the proper procedure.
“We now have confidence in the fit and function of ACDelco alternators for non-GM applications,” James added. “This will allow us to stock parts with a consistent quality and warranty. Having quality parts that fit right the first time not only reduces installation and repair time, but ensures customer service in the process.”

ACDelco Reinforces Aftermarket Leadership Role by Adding More than 10,000 New Parts in 2006

ACDelco Reinforces Aftermarket Leadership Role by Adding More than 10,000 New Parts in 2006
GRAND BLANC, MICH. — In its ongoing effort to offer automotive aftermarket parts for most vehicles on the road today, ACDelco has introduced more than 10,000 new parts through October of 2006 across its 36 product lines. This brings the total number of ACDelco's parts offerings to more than 99,000.
"ACDelco continues to add part numbers to our all-makes / all-models product lines to maintain or enhance our position in the market," said Rick Karlewski, manager, product strategy, ACDelco. Karlewski noted ACDelco worked with its Warehouse Distributor and Total Service Support Advisory Boards over the past year to improve the position of ACDelco products in the independent aftermarket.
"These customers provide the feedback to help ACDelco maintain and improve its competitive position with high-quality parts for consumers' vehicles," Karlewski added. "They also provide guidance on the development and expansion of our product portfolio to help ensure the products are right for the market upon launch."
Of its 10,000-plus new part numbers introduced in 2006, ACDelco added more than 3,100 of them to its Undercar lines. ACDelco steering products, which include hoses, pumps, gears and racks, accounted for over 1,700 new part numbers, while its DuraStop® brake line added 900+ new parts.
The biggest addition occurred in ACDelco's Ignition, Emission and Wire & Cable product lines. ACDelco added more than 3,600 total parts to these three lines — on top of the nearly 12,000 parts introduced in its 2004–2005 expansion — providing even greater coverage of non-GM applications.
"This expansion further strengthens ACDelco's reputation as a leading provider of those parts," said Chris Brandt, portfolio manager, ACDelco Ignition, Emission and Wire & Cable. "The new part numbers allow Independent Service Centers to get competitively priced parts in all three lines from an ACDelco Warehouse Distributor."
ACDelco also expanded its Heating / Ventilating / Air Conditioning (HVAC) line by more than 750 parts, bringing the total number of ACDelco HVAC parts to more than 10,000. "Our HVAC expansion gives ACDelco more air conditioning part numbers than any of its competitors," said Jim Monaghan, product specialist, ACDelco Air Conditioning. "The new supplement has parts for more than 18,000 non-GM applications."
ACDelco also unveiled 10 new GM-application Original Equipment (OE) torque converter pressure plates assembly part numbers, eight of which feature ACDelco's Electronically Controlled Capacity Clutch (EC3) technology. The extraordinary EC3 clutch, made from a special GM-patented friction material, helps eliminate shifting hesitation and roughness.
Also in 2006, ACDelco launched its Beam Wiper Blade with a cutting-edge, frameless design that helps the blade conform to the shape of the windshield. Multiple pressure points help provide consistent contact with the glass, and the blade has no exposed parts that can get clogged with ice and snow.
ACDelco reintroduced a short line of Classic Oil Filters in 2006 to provide customers with a choice. "ACDelco's Classic Oil Filters complement our current lineup," said Bob Malone, Portfolio manager, ACDelco Quick Service Products.
"While many of our customers like the new design introduced in 2005, some kept asking for the original, which features a longer shell length, steel inner-core construction and a traditional mounting plate. Now, they have two different styles from which to choose."
ACDelco expanded its Marine Battery line by introducing the Marine 60 Series Batteries to complement the ACDelco Voyager® Batteries. "The addition of the Marine 60 Series battery gives our customers an alternative that is cost efficient, while still maintaining the quality and value they know," said Doug Merrill, ACDelco Product specialist. "The Marine 60 Series battery offers enough marine crank amps to start the most demanding outboard."
ACDelco also enhanced its automotive batteries by extending the warranty period on its Professional Series 6YR and 7YR batteries. The free replacement limited warranty period for ACDelco 6YR and 72-month Maintenance Free (MF) batteries increased to 30 months, while the free replacement limited warranty period for ACDelco 7YR and 84-month MF batteries jumped to 50 months.
"It's the best free replacement warranty in the business," said Doug Bidgood, Maintenance and Repair Portfolio manager, ACDelco Batteries. "ACDelco knows the warranty period is an important consideration when selecting a battery. By extending the free replacement limited warranty on our Professional 6YR and 7YR batteries, ACDelco is offering yet another reason for installers and consumers alike to choose our product."
ACDelco markets quality parts for Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, GM and most vehicles on the road today. To find an ACDelco parts retailer near you, log on to acdelco.com or call 1-800-ACDelco.

What is the warranty on the battery that came with my vehicle? It says that it has a six-year warranty.
The battery that comes with a GM vehicle is covered by the limited warranty of three years or 36,000 miles (48 months/4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first, for Cadillac, Buick and HUMMER) and should be taken back to the GM dealership. The six-year warranty is for the consumer who purchased the battery in the aftermarket; the battery should be returned to the place of purchase with the receipt.
Where can I find a warranty-covered replacement battery?
You can find a local ACDelco battery retailer through the ACDelco Parts Retailer or Service Center online, or call 1-800-ACDelco and one of our friendly representatives will help you locate a warranty center in your area.
How do I read the warranty date code on my battery?
The warranty date code is located on the top label of the battery. The first character is either a P or S. The next two digits determine the month, the third digit is year and the fourth digit indicates the manufacturing plant. For example, P 094N means the battery was made in September 2004 in the New Brunswick factory.

More Starters and Alternators

ACDelco Alternators with Limited Lifetime Warranty
ACDelco remanufactured alternators are available for most vehicles on the road today and are 100 percent tested after remanufacture.
Rectifiers
Rectifier failure, most often caused by diode malfunction, is one of the primary causes of alternator failure.
ACDelco Rectifiers are 100 percent electronically tested and replaced when needed.
Bearings
Bearings are critical to alternator durability because of extreme lateral loads applied by the drive belt, in addition to excessive heat and vibration.
Bearings are always replaced.
ACDelco Alternators use only quality bearings with high-temperature lubrication and double-lipped rubber seals.
Rotors and Stators
The heart of the alternator and its current-generating components, rotors, and stators may be subjected to excessive heat that can deteriorate insulation and cause shorts.
ACDelco Rotors and Stators are electronically tested for proper performance then sealed with a flexible secondary insulating coating.
Slip Rings
Slip rings must be in constant contact with the brushes, or uneven wear can occur and lead to failure.
ACDelco Slip Rings are precision-polished to help maximize electrical contact and consistent output.
Brushes
Worn brushes interrupt electrical contact and shorten the life of alternators.
Brushes are always replaced.
ACDelco Brushes are 100 percent lead-free and durability-tested for performance and reliability.

ACDelco Air Filters

ACDelco Air Filters
Regular use of ACDelco Air Filters for the engine and cabin is important for you and your car. Cabin air filters help eliminate common airborne pollutants from the interior of your vehicle, while the engine air filter blocks particles that are harmful to the combustion chamber.
Engine Air Filter
Let your engine breathe clean air. ACDelco Engine Air Filters use world-class filter element technology to block almost all airborne dust and dirt — including particles as small as a grain of salt — that can harm your engine. ACDelco Air Filters are available in panel and round styles to fit most vehicles, and they offer other benefits:
Excellent filter capacity, efficiency, flow management, and durability
The ability to trap microscopic dirt that can damage cylinder walls, pistons, and piston rings
Tight seals that help prevent unfiltered air from entering your engine
Available sizes to fit virtually every car, light- and heavy-duty truck, and sport utility vehicle on the road today
12-month/12,000-mile limited warranty*
Round-style filters also feature:
As a safety measure, a fine mesh screen to help reduce the risk of fire
Heat-resistant flexible material on the top and bottom with special sealing beads that provide a protective seal against automotive operating environments
A radial seal for easy installation on late model vehicles
Cabin Air Filter
The air inside your vehicle may actually contain more particles than the air outside. That’s why ACDelco Cabin Air Filters are designed to help filter out molds, pollen, allergens, smoke, fumes, and odors. When changed regularly, our filters can help reduce wear on your vehicle’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. Here are more great reasons to use ACDelco Cabin Air Filters:
Advanced filter media technology helps reduce pollutants that reach the interior for more comfort
Highly durable and reliable
Removes most allergens from the air entering the vehicle’s ventilation system

ACDelco’s Role

ACDelco’s Role
ACDelco is concerned about counterfeit parts for a number of reasons. First, fake parts cast a shadow on our reputation as a provider of high-quality replacement parts. Second, they lead to a loss in sales, as well as jobs, for the company and the automotive industry.
Since we at ACDelco have worked hard to establish and maintain our reputation, we take it personally when counterfeiters jeopardize our status.
We are working side by side with law enforcement agencies as well as other automotive manufacturers to battle counterfeit parts makers. We're also working with investigators and prosecutors to help convict anyone caught counterfeiting.
In an effort to make counterfeiting even more difficult for imitation parts producers, ACDelco is now affixing a distinct mark on certain parts. This mark will assist officials in distinguishing genuine products from their fake counterparts.
